Back to School

I am half-way through my intensive 4-week French class. After our 3 1/2 hour daily class, I come home and spend the rest of the day trying to figure out what I was supposed to learn during class. I am the only American (Americaine) in our class, and everyone else seems to catch on fast. I guess it helps to have experience learning a language.

This is what I see as I exit my class each day; it is the Capitole. It is quiet in the morning, but by afternoon, the area is filled with people and activities. I enjoy my walk home after class each day!

CARCASSONNE: Our neighborhood Castle

We stepped back in time as we visited Carcassonne. Part of the wall was built in the Roman era, and other additions and renovations came later.

Carcassonne is actually about an hour away from where we live, but I consider it "in the neighborhood."

The church within Carcassonne City. We heard another organist there. I am thoroughly enjoying all of the good organists in France.

Madame Carcas: The story is told is that during a seige, she fed the last of the food to a pig to fatten him up. The people then threw the pig over the wall. The invading army decided the seige was not working and gave up. The city became Carcassonne in her honor.

There were no guard-rails and some pretty step drops. The signs said something about entering at your own risk. Beautiful, but a little scary.

We stopped for a little afternoon refreshment. The Coke bottles have individual names on them, but I haven't seen Marci or Eric yet.

A view through the roof of the train that took us around the outside of Carcassonne.

We exited through one of the gates of Carcassonne and said goodbye to the city for now. I'm sure we will be back.

Scenes from an evening stroll

Eric made it home from work around 7:30 tonight. We ate dinner in our lovely little courtyard and then went for a walk. Here are a few things that we saw:

I start an intensive French class next Monday for four weeks. Since I will be in class for 3 1/2 hours every morning, I probably won't have much time for blogging, and I'm trying to soak in all of the beautiful scenes near our apartment!

LYON (Deux)

I just found the program from a wonderful organ concert we attended in Lyon. The organist, who was from Paris, was probably the best I have ever heard, and the acoustics were amazing.

I also found my program and badge from the International Librarian Conference (IFLA):

Tennis: The search continues...

We found a few tennis courts that look promising and played a few games of tennis before Eric's string broke. Now, it looks like this:

Apparently, it is time to find someone who strings rackets in our area. Yet another translation and Internet searching challenge! We haven't found any English-speaking tennis players yet, so no doubles for awhile.

Dinner in the Park:

A beautiful evening for a casual dinner in the park. This little eatery was crowded when we started about 8:30 pm...

And it was still crowded as we walked by again an hour later.

LYON:

With our 33rd Wedding Anniversary coming up and also the IFLA (librarian) conference nearby, we decided to fly to Lyon. On the weekend, we saw a bit of Lyon and on Monday, I spent the day at the IFLA conference.

Lyon is a charming city and has the second largest metropolitan area in France (after Paris). With a little help from Rick Steve's travel book, we were able to pack a lot of sight-seeing into one day.

St. Jean's Cathedral

Riding the metro...

Place Bellecour

Funiculaire: We rode this up the mountainside

The View from the top!

Wonderful gelatos!

I was thinking of Rapunzel and also of Romeo & Juliet

Roman Theaters

Built around 15 BC!

This was the Rhone River, and we also walked along the Saone River.

There is no better way to finish off a wonderful day and a delicious French dinner, than with Crème brûlée and chocolate cake!
